What we do in Wimborne
Extinction Rebellion Wimborne specialise in headline grabbing, peaceful, non-disruptive actions designed to communicate vital messages about the climate and ecological emergencies to the widest possible audience. Our actions are always pre-liaised with the police.
Our group was founded in May 2019 and has staged dozens of actions locally and taken part in many regional and national actions.
We protest against...
Our Government’s failure adequately to address the climate and nature emergencies. Instead of a rapid transition to a green, circular economy, it remains wedded to economic growth irrespective of environmental damage.
Biodiversity … It is failing to prioritise biodiversity, preferring short term economic gains to long term environmental wellbeing.
Renewables … A rapid transition away from fossil fuels towards renewables is not a priority for Government. The stimulation of the green economy is vital if we want a liveable future on this planet. It would also generate jobs, prosperity and less pollution.
Renewable energy is clean, green and local and provides a cheaper alternative to fossil fuels which are subject to international pricing and the vagaries of tyrants.
Adaptation … Our Government is failing to implement adaptation measures. We all face a future of unpredictable weather characterised by heatwaves, floods and drought.
Does our Government care at all about the future? … The fossil fuel industry, the banking sector and the arms industry exert pressure on Government and the Government fails to take action to protect the population and populations worldwide from the inevitable consequences of these planet destroying, destructive and unethical industries.
The Government fails adequately to tax fossil fuel profits, or to move away from fossil fuel subsidies paid from the public purse.
We also hold local government and big business accountable for their failures to prioritise a habitable planet for us all.
Our campaigns include:
Dirty Banks … The planet destroying fossil fuel investments of banks. Is your bank sustainable?
Wessex Water … Wessex Water’s dumping of raw sewage. Wessex Water has a shameful record of paying billions of pounds to shareholders whilst not investing enough in the sewerage system to make it fit for use. It really is Top of the Poops.
Dorset Council Stop Spraying Glyphosate (Roundup) … Why hasn’t a timetable been set for ending the use of pesticides in Dorset? They harm nature and humans. Stop it!
Act now …Write to your Dorset Councillor to ask them to demand a timetable for ending its use. Find you Councillor.
The Pesticide Action Network provides a framework for a 3 year phase out: https://www.pan-uk.org/site/wp-content/uploads/Phase-out-plan.pdf
Rockhopper Out! … Rockhopper Oil’s destruction of the environment (in collaboration with Extinction Rebellion Salisbury).
Perenco Out! Ditch Wytch Farm … Perenco Oil’s pollution of Poole Harbour (in collaboration with Extinction Rebellion BCP). #PerencoOut
What’s going on in Wimborne St Giles? The Earl of Shaftesbury’s continued ownership and exploitation of Lough Neagh across the Irish Sea.
Few in Dorset or indeed in England seem to be aware of this tremendous injustice to nature and the people of Ireland, particularly those who attend the frequent festivals hosted at St Giles House.
(Extinction Rebellion Wimborne in collaboration with Friends of the Earth.)
